In his biography for the show, Pope shared a delightful mental image: “I’ve been painting watercolors since I was 10 years old, after finishing a paint-by-number piece and being fascinated by how the little patches of color made a picture.”

Painting became a lifetime hobby for Pope, who eventually became a doctor, spending 18 years in family practice and 20 in emergency medicine, but who continued to share his images of the North Shore.

“As is true with so many who live on the North Shore, I feel a strong attraction to Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Range. I try to capture the beauty of our area in my paintings, and hope that they foster a sense of stewardship for the land in the viewer,” said Pope.

The show continues until May 8.
