The Wednesday, April 21, 2010 Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission (PUC) meeting was short and sweet. Minutes from the last meeting were approved, as was payment of bills that needed to be paid. The only city employee with much of anything to report was Water/Wastewater Superintendent Tom Nelson.
Nelson told PUC commissioners Bob Spry and Tim Kennedy that the Community Center used 81,000 gallons of water to flood the outdoor hockey and figure skating rinks this last winter at a cost of $425.25. The indoor curling rink used only 10,000 gallons to get set up for the winter. The Curling Club floods to a depth of two inches. The outdoor rinks use a lot more water, Nelson said in a separate phone interview, because they are made of porous ground and cover more surface area.
The city will start charging the Community Center this summer for all of the water it uses, including whatever is used for watering the gardens on the property.
During the April 10 practice burn of the fire-condemned Tom Crosby house on 4th Street and 1st Avenue East in Grand Marais, crews found that one city hydrant needed repair. One valve of the three on the hydrant did not open properly, Nelson said. City crews fixed it soon after.
