Watch for hidden agendas

I bought the October 16th issue of the Cook
County News-Herald
to read more about the Grand Marais mayoral candidates. What’s of interest is the information couched between the lines or simply omitted altogether.

For instance, while listing all of his past accomplishments, Mark Sandbo neglected to mention that during his last tenure as mayor, he gave the go-ahead to Cobblestone Cove Condominiums without the mandatory prior public process of review and dissent, and he subsequently became a rental agent for this development which divides the harbor beach into two parts and deprives the citizenry of a significant view. He also failed to mention that when Evelyn Larsen took over his mayoral seat, the city coffers were almost empty, thanks largely to his “exuberant” spending habits. In today’s economy, this is a sobering history.

Larry “Bear” Carlson approaches the mayoral race as a clean slate without the experience or exposure to the political climate that the other candidate possesses. Initially this may make him appear politically na¿ve; however, how long will it take a man with a masters in physics to catch on and catch up? I shouldn’t think very long at all. While he lacks experience in the Grand Marais political arena, this is not a fault but a strength. It certainly seems to preclude the cronyism and hidden agendas lurking just below the surface in so many Grand Marais elections.

I urge you not to take what you read at face value. Many issues which upon first look appear to be resolved are merely percolating below the surface. Every voter needs to read between the lines in political propaganda, no matter which officeis at stake.
