The Senior Connect West Christmas Party warmed the bellies of 20 people on Dec. 17. Santa’s little helper, Nancy Christenson, delivered the good news that everyone’s meal was courtesy of Grand Marais State Bank.
Pam McDougall won a $100 Visa gift card in the Autumn Community Center incentive program. Over 140 participants took surveys, volunteered and attended events making them eligible to win.
Forty-two people took tours of the revitalized community space and Bruce Martinson won a $10 gift card for doing just that. Since the giveaway was so popular we will be repeating it January through March 2015.
Zup’s of Silver Bay donated a $25 gift card and we are encouraging other business donors to join in the fun. To sponsor or donate an incentive gift, call Caroline at (218) 663- 7977.
Advisory Group Eagles (AGE) 55+
Thanks to Cook County, our Senior Connect West program will benefit from an additional $1,200 in 2015. This is our first increase in eight years and we aim to make the most of it. Our seniors participated in a focus group and leisure interest survey this month.
On January 7, everyone 55 plus is encouraged to join us for senior lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay as we launch Advisory Group Eagle’s (A.G.E.’s) 55+. The Bald Eagle in our entryway is a symbol of fair and just treatment. As the AGE’s 55+ mascot it will inspire adults to advocate for themselves and their neighbors. We look forward to a self-governed group electing an AGE 55+ moderator and Birch Grove Foundation AGE 55+ liaison. Participants will help us develop programs and services that adults 55+ will enjoy.
West End property owner outreach
Seven volunteers put heroic efforts into sending over 1,500 West End property owners Happy New Year’s wishes. Special thanks to Ginny Cooley through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) who donated over 25 hours to make this mailer possible.
Thanks also to Pam McDougall, Julie Rannetsberger, Nancy Koloski, Nancy Iverson, Nancy Christenson, Jessica Cameron, and Riley T. for your hard work.
Wonderful times are enjoyed by everyone when W.E. Connect in the West End! Warm wishes for a happy holiday!
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte courtesy of Caroline Wood.
