Warm up with wonderful activities at the Senior Center

We all have had a very cold and snowy past month. Is everyone tired of shoveling yet?

We have been fortunate at the Senior Center to be filled with so many happy faces and warm hearts… it makes each winter day warmer and brighter.

On Thursday, January 20, we had a special Hawaiian Luau Luncheon. Complete with Hawaiian decorations, music and everyone received a lei. A group of 40-plus helped make it quite a festive occasion! After a delicious Hawaiian style luncheon, we enjoyed a game of musical lei’s, played similarly to musical chairs. Susan Shaeffer was our winner and received a free Senior Center lunch ticket.

Every month we have been having a “Dining at the Senior Center Drawing.” The monthly winner is the lucky recipient of a gift certificate graciously donated by local businesses. On January 4, we drew for our December prize, which was a $25 gift certificate donated by our friends at Joynes Department Store. Shirley Ellquist was the lucky and excited winner.

There is almost always something fun happening at the Grand Marais Senior Center. And often, it is something light-hearted and fun, like this celebration on Thursday, January 20. Senior Center visitors were invited to a Hawaiian Luau Luncheon. Left: Bill and Susan Shaeffer pooh-poohed the snow and came dressed in their favorite tropical attire. Above: Buddy Skinner also got in the luau spirit, donning a grass skirt.

Our January prize is a $25 gift certificate donated by Holiday Station stores. The drawing will be held on Tuesday, February 1. Coming up next month, our lucky winner will have a choice of prizes. They will be able to choose from a month-long bus pass, donated by Arrowhead Transit or two free deluxe car washes, donated by Clyde’s Car Wash. To be eligible to win all you have to do is stop in for lunch. With each lunch you will receive one entry ticket. Eat more often…win more often!

Coming up on Tuesday, February 15, we will be hosting a special Valentine luncheon. Mark your calendars and bring a date or a friend.

Wednesday, February 16, our Senior Center bus will be once again traveling up to Grand Portage for our monthly trip of fun and hopefully luck. The cost for round-trip transportation is $11. Reserve your spot by signing up at or calling the Senior Center at 387-2660.

On Mondays and Fridays after lunch we have been having a blast bowling on the Wii game machine. Nona Smith is our resident pro and is a tough one to beat…. are you up to the challenge? We would love to have you come in and play.

On Tuesdays after lunch is jigsaw puzzle building…which is a great winter pastime.

On Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:00 in the morning, join our Gentle Exercise and Stretch Group. This is offered free of charge and open to all of all abilities…even limited abilities. After lunch on Wednesdays we play card games. The game of choice lately has been Push. We are looking for more players to join us.

On Thursdays at 9:45 in the morning, join us for cribbage, and after lunch, bingo! The cost for bingo is $1.00 for the entire session. We have prizes such as treats to eat, a chance to win the pot, which is currently at $18. There is also a daily grand prize, which can include your choice of gift certificates donated by local businesses or a Senior Center lunch ticket.
