Depending on where you find the numbers, there are estimated to be from 40,000 to 50,000 homeless veterans in the United States.
And while one is too many, the country’s service members who are in need of an assortment of help, first need to stay alive through Minnesota’s cold winter. That’s where Help-A-Vet comes in, and your part as well through American Legion Post 413’s efforts.
American Legion Post 413 Auxiliary members are once again collecting warm clothing for Help-A-Vet, a nonprofit group from Minneapolis that works with Twin Cities homeless veterans.
Auxiliary member Nancy Backlund organized the drive last year when she learned about the team. Help- A-Vet seeks items such as winter coats, winter boots, socks, long johns, sweatshirts, new men’s underwear, backpacks, travel-sized toiletries, and sleeping bags.
If you would like to help Post 413 Legion Auxiliary collect warm clothing or other items homeless veterans could use, please bring them to Grandma Ray’s (American Legion lounge) in Grand Marais on Friday, November 11.
For more information, please contact Nancy Backlund at (218) 387-1798.
