How stuffed is your front closet? If it’s hard to hang your new down jacket up when you get in from the cold, maybe it’s time to give away some of that “gently used” winter outerwear that’s taking up a lot of space but not being used.
To help with that, the Cook County High School National Honor Society and Bethlehem Lutheran Church are sponsoring two winter clothing drives.
The honor society has drop boxes in four locations: at the Grand Marais Public Library, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. John’s Catholic Church (all in Grand Marais), and at Lutsen Lutheran Church.
According to CCHS teacher Ivy Church, “The National Honor Society has had winter clothing drives before, but this time, in addition to asking for gifts of winter clothing, we’re encouraging people to take as needed from the collections…. Winter is upon us, and people need outerwear, all sizes, gently used. Last year the boxes overflowed our van!”
Bethlehem Lutheran Church Secretary Laura LaFavor said, “CCHS honor society officers Sarissa Falk and Katie VanderHeiden came in with a box for their drive, and the one thing they said with theirs is people are welcome to rummage through and trade up or down for items they need as well.”
The National Honor Society clothing drive will end November 30.
Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s winter coat drive is being sponsored by its youth group and will continue through December 20. They are hoping to collect warm winter jackets and coats, but hats and mittens are being donated as well.
The outerwear collected by both the honor society and Bethlehem Lutheran will go to the Damiano Center in Duluth, which provides services to community members in need.
“It’s nice for the youth to hear of a need and all start to act upon it, showing the compassion of our youth and the response to those in need,” said LaFavor.
