With the starting line temperature hovering around 35F and a soon to be falling light rain, more than 120 shivering runners gathered at the Coast Guard Station parking lot on Saturday, June 9 to take part in the inaugural Voyage North 5k and 10K running races that ended at Voyageur Brewing Company.
Frigid weather aside, the runners wore broad smiles, many clad in warm running gear as the gun went off and sent them on their way.
A surprised but elated Noah Loubier, age 13 from Rosslyn, Ontario, won the 5K race in 24:48, averaging 7:58 per mile over the hilly course.
Stephanie Radloff, Grand Marais, was the women’s winner with a time of 26:20, an 8:28 mile pace for the 3.1-mile distance.
Grand Marais Mayor Jay Arrowsmith-DeCoux won the inaugural Voyage North 10K (6.2 miles) in 40:20, averaging 6:29 per mile.
Kellie Kratt, Duluth, was the women’s winner with a time of 47:55, a 7:42 mile pace. Kellie is Visit Cook County director Linda Jurek’s daughter-in-law.
