Following the county board’s antics is often more entertaining than watching Comedy Central. The commissioners found it necessary to pass a unanimous resolution against the voter ID amendment. There was no mention or concern from them about the importance of election integrity. Instead there was a great deal of feigned anxiety about what it might cost.
Imagine anything more amusing than this county board actually fretting about the potential cost of something when they are spending 10 million dollars on a community center that will drain the county coffers for years. And that is where the humor ends.
Inserting themselves into this political issue under the guise of fiscal stewardship is out of bounds. The MN legislature intended this amendment to be decided by the voters, not by local county governments. Obviously, someone on the county board has a political agenda and is influencing the others, but that is hardly news either. If members of the county board find it necessary to wade into partisan politics, let them form a political action committee so they can do it on their own time and on their own dime.
