Volunteers planting some of the 1,300 white pine, black and white spruce along the Flute Reed in Hovland. The Flute Reed Partnership plans to plant over 1,300 more trees this spring.

Last year 1,100 white pine, black and white spruce were planted on five different private properties along the Flute Reed River. Thisyear the Flute Reed Partnership (FRP) is going to plant over 1,300.

Would you like FRP to plant trees on your property for free? If you own property along the Flute Reed River or any of its tributaries, the partnership is offering you the chance to add value and beauty at no cost.

FRP plans to plant upstream of the new bridge on North Road and within 150 feet of the river or any of its tributaries. Contact FRP member Rick Schubert at 218-475-2778 or rschub@centurytel.net to set up a time. We will work with you on where to plant the trees.

Help is also needed on Saturday May 1 and/or May 8. We will provide the trees and the materials, plus a free box lunch. Schubert said, “We’ll meet at 9 a.m. at the Hovland Town Hall each Saturday. Wear old clothes, an old coat and sturdy boots. Bring gloves, a hat and raingear. We’ll have safety glasses and planting equipment.”

Schubert added that FRP’s insurance coverage requires tree planters to be 14 years or older.
