I was reminded the other day about how lucky we are, as people, to have givers in our midst.
I was having difficulty helping my mother from the vehicle (a curb was involved) and this gentleman immediately offered his assistance. I didn’t know him and I’m sure he didn’t know us, yet he jumped at the chance to help his fellow man (okay, woman). A small gesture that I took as an expression of love.
And then I reflected on all of the other ways people help each other with no thought of gain for themselves. To the person who walks across a parking lot and sees a piuece of garbage and instead of just walking by, decides to reach down and pick it up. Nothing noteworthy, but a gift all the same.
To the board members of nonprofits, you give of your time and talents regularly. Attend meetings and “special” meetings religiously and spend countless hours researching and stressing about each decision made to improve lives. Most of what you do is taken for granted and even judged.
To all of you who bring a hot dish or bars to a funeral, sell concessions at a sporting event, read to the aging, collect food and supplies for those in need. It can be as small as a warm squeeze of a hand to let someone know you care or a smile of encouragement.
I would like to thank those people who selflessly give of themselves. You bring light, positivity and inspire others to do the same.
