Volleyball team wins the first match in Section 7A playoffs

Top-ranked Cook County wasted little time taking care of number 8 ranked Lakeview Christian in a second round Section 7A playoff game played at home on Wednesday night, October 26 in front of a large crowd of cheering Viking fans.

The 16-2 Vikings received a first round bye. Lakeview Christian defeated the Floodwood Polar Bears to advance to the second playoff round, which is not bad for a school that doesn’t have a gymnasium to practice in or play games in.

Wasting little time, the Pam Taylor coached Vikings won the best of five games against the Lions in three straight games, 25-9, 25-9, 25-17.

Meredith Sutton finished the game with 20 digs and 17 kills. Tarin Hanson had 29 set assists; Alyssa Lashinski had nine kills and five ace serves; and Raina Ryden had 21 digs for the night.

There were no stats available at press time for the Lakeview players.

The Vikings ended their Polar League Conference season in second place with a 10-1 conference record. Esko, a double A school, finished first with a 9-0 record in the 12-school division.

Meredith Sutton, the Vikings’ junior outside hitter, was clearly the top player in the Polar League this year. She led the league in hitting percentage with a .371 average; led in kills with 338, was third in serving aces with 33, third in blocks with 38, and second in digs with 420.

Meanwhile, Raina Ryden finished first in the conference in digs with 564 and fifth in serving aces with 28.

Tarin Hanson finished second in the league in assists with 520; Emily Jacobsen was fifth in kills with 111; and Reilly Wahlers was fifth with 207 digs.

The Vikings play at home again on Friday at 7 p.m. They will face the winner of the match between Silver Bay and South Ridge. Should they win they will play on November 2 in Virginia at 5:30 p.m. and will face either Carlton or Cromwell. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
