Volleyball team wins first playoff game against Wrenshall

Receiving a first round bye, the Vikings’ Section 7A playoff match against the Wrenshall Wrens was played at home in front of a packed house of hopeful fans on Wednesday, October 22. They didn’t disappoint, beating the Wrens 25-21, 25-13, 25-14.

Up 9-3 in the second game, the Vikings seemed to lose their momentum and before long Wrenshall trailed by one point, 11-10. The Vikings worked their lead to 15-11 and the Wrens’ coach called a time out. The next point was a wild one. The Wrens seemed to find a hole in the Vikings’ defense when their big hitter Tatum Swanson smashed one by the Vikings’ front line into the backcourt. But an outstretched fist by a diving Meredith Sutton saved the ball and the point eventually went to the Vikings.

It seemed to break the Wrens’ back and the Vikings pounded out a 25-13 win.

Fine passing, setting and consistent serving set the tone for the Vikings all night long.

Meredith ended with 12 kills, 11 digs and 4 serving aces. Linden Sutton finished with 8 kills, 4 blocks and 13 digs. Britta Andress had 6 blocks and Maddy Roy had 10 digs and 18 set assists.

At press time, the Vikings were preparing to face Southridge on Friday, October 24 in the third round of playoffs.
