Volley for a Cure– a fun fundraiser

Pink laughter filled the Cook County High School gymnasium on Monday, October 13 as volleyballs sailed throughout the gymnasium like large pieces of popcorn popping in an all too hot kettle.

Kids and parents joined in the frolic, playing one joyful volleyball game after another in the spirit of competition and fun in the annual “Volley for a Cure” with fun being the optimal word.

To start things off grades 5 and 6 faced off against the 7th grade. The 7th grade won but the 5th and 6th graders acquitted themselves quite well. Next the 8th grade played against the 9th grade in a spirited contest with the 9th grade just edging the scrappy 8th graders.

The junior varsity squared off against the teachers and staff and although the older crowd did themselves proud, they were no match for the youngsters.

And finally the varsity challenged the alumni and parents in the classic match of the night. Yes, in spite of some (detrimental) help from the scoreboard keepers, the varsity won. Easily.

Overall, however, the big winners are local breast cancer patients and survivors.

Freewill donations were taken at the door and raffle tickets were sold for blankets, tote bags and more. Memory ribbons were also sold to honor loves ones who had breast cancer.

At the end of the night $1,795 was raised. All proceeds will be donated to the North Shore Health Care Foundation which provides support for local cancer patients.

“A huge thank you to all who came out for this event. Fun was had by everyone,” said Head Volleyball Coach Pam Taylor.
