Visitors Bureau hopes for more holiday lights




Maggie Barnard of the Cook County Visitors Bureau spoke to city council Oct. 27 about the agency’s plan to raise funds for more holiday lights and decorations as a follow-up to last year’s successful effort. Specifically, she said, the Bureau hopes to add lights to the lampposts along the Harbor Walk (between Java Moose and Angry Trout) if estimates to install outlets on the posts prove feasible. Council gave its approval to the plan.

. Councilor and library board member Kay Costello reported that talks with the architect for the expansion project are ongoing, and the county board has approved

use of $60,000 of the 1 percent tax funding for the design work. However, she said

the county commissioners have requested more information about the project’s

total estimated cost of $800,000 and have some questions about who should act as

the fiscal agent (city or county) and possibly re-examining the library’s joint operating agreement. . Crystal Clemons was appointed to the city’s park board, and will fill a three-year position, which runs through the end of 2012. Clemons said she was excited about

the opportunity and believes she has some good ideas to offer. The park board now has its full complement of seven members. . Councilor and Public Utilities Commission member Tim Kennedy reported that water line and fire hydrant replacement in two alleys has been nearly completed, with only some landscaping remaining to be done. The work was funded in part through a $100,000 IRRB grant; total project cost was about $220,000.
