Visit the Senior Center for information— and fun

During the month of October, Assistant Director Kristen Anderson was traveling around the great Southwest. She kept the Senior Center updated about her travels with emails and pictures. Stop by and take a look. By the time you read this, Kristen should be back at work.

In Kristen’s absence, I have been fortunate to have had some wonderful volunteers helping me out. The volunteers offer much-needed help answering phones, helping in the kitchen and entertaining us with their humor and wit. Thank you everyone for all the help this month.

Building rehab

As you may have read in the News-Herald, the Senior Center was chosen for a grant to do some rehabilitation on the building. Projects we are looking at are new entrance doors, gutters, new energy efficient windows, handicap bathroom upgrades, siding and insulation.

Bids went out the last week of October and projects will be chosen by the Cook County Council on Aging based on funds available to match the grant.

Polka time

On October 16, 18 polka lovers boarded the Senior Center bus and went to the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino to hear the Chmielewski Funtime Band. The friendship, music and food were enjoyed by all—especially the chocolate fudge treat we had on the way up. Susan Shaffer makes the best fudge!

More fun trips!

There are a few more fun Senior Center trips coming up in November. On November 17-18, seniors and friends can hop on the Senior Center bus for a Black Bear Casino and Wal-Mart holiday shopping tour. The bus will take off on Thursday and travel to Black Bear Casino for the night. The next day will include shopping and lunch at Mexico Lindo in Cloquet. Call or visit the Senior Center for the itinerary and cost of this fun trip.

And there will be two trips on the Grand Portage Casino Express, on Wednesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 30. Catch the bus on “Lucky Wednesday” and pay bus bingo on the way. Ride the bus and receive $5 in free slot play. Sign up for the trip by Tuesday, November 8 or Tuesday, November 29, respectively.

Stop by the Senior Center for information on November trips or call (218) 387-2660.

News from the “Brighter Side” of aging is provided this month by Bev Green, director of the Grand Marais Senior Center. The senior center can be reached at (218) 387-2660 or via e-mail at CCCOA@boreal.org.
