Late Wednesday afternoon, June 30, a dramatic thunderstorm shut down the electrical power in Grand Marais. Closer to Canada, in the east end of the county, there was heavy rain and blankets of hail. Weather Watcher Josiah Avery reports that the hail size ranged from pea size to quarter size pellets of ice. Sadly, Josiah’s garden was a complete loss. “It not only sustained hail damage but was also flooded by torrential rain. Our gravel driveway also suffered some damage in the form of deep ruts. We received 1.40 inches of rain in about 25 minutes.”
