As part of its efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence, the Violence Prevention Center (VPC) painted the town on Monday, October 11. Well, they painted as many fingernails purple as possible. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Community members had their fingers painted to make a statement against domestic violence and to raise awareness of the issue. VPC will be painting fingernails purple again on Monday, October 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Java Moose. Left: Donna Lunke of Grand Marais gets her fingernails painted by Kayla O’Bryan of VPC while VPC Director Jodi Yuhasey waits for another volunteer.
Right: VPC Board Member Denny Fitzpatrick had his nails painted purple, but added an extra touch—a purple ribbon showing solidarity with all who are working to end domestic violence. Fitzpatrick said his nails “are a little rough” but the point is to increase awareness of the problem. Fitzpatrick sadly noted that VPC handles an average of 90 cases every year.
