After a first game playoff loss to Carlton, the CCHS Viking baseball team knew it had to keep winning to get to the Section 7A finals, unfortunately, despite a great season and a 17-5 won-loss record, they came up short.
Vikings defeated Littlefork-Big Falls
With the score 2-2 after two innings, it looked like it was going to be a long day for the boys from Cook County in their Section 7A playoff game against Littlefork- Big Falls played Thursday, May 30.
It did turn out to be a long day, but not for the Vikings.
The Vikings scored 14 runs in the third inning which was highlighted by a towering grand slam home run hit by Dillon Sjogren.
The team from Littlefork-Big Falls, which is also called the Vikings, ran out of experienced pitching after the second inning, and the relievers walked one Viking after another as the team batted around the line-up almost twice.

Vikings versus Ely
The Vikings played the 16-6 Ely Timberwolves on June 4 at Duluth’s Wade Stadium with both teams fighting to advance in the playoffs.
One month ago the two teams met in Ely, and the Vikings came away with a close 6-5 win. This was going to be a tough game for one side; unfortunately, it turned out that way for the Vikings.
Ely got on the scoreboard in the first inning, pushing two runs across the plate on a line drive single to center fielder Paul Dorr off the bat of Trevor Mattson.
Ely led 2-0 until the sixth inning when they put two more runs on the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, the Ely pitcher Dalton Schreffler was in command the whole way, pitching seven innings as the Vikings fell 4-0, dashing their playoff hopes.
Schreffler gave up five hits, three walks and didn’t allow a run.
Senior first baseman Joe Deschampe was two for three at the plate, as was Aram Falter, a sophomore outfielder. Tristen Bockovich was the only other Vikings to get a hit. Dillon Sjogren and Connor Somnis both reached first base on fielder’s choice plays; otherwise, the Ely defense held up throughout the game, recording one error while keeping the Vikings’ offense at bay.
Tristen Bockovich took the loss for the Vikings. Tristen pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and allowing five walks. Tristen recorded four strikeouts in the game and was relieved by Adam Dorr.
