Sophomore forward Lily Gruber-Schulz scored a gamehigh 24 points to lead Cook County High School to a 53-41 victory in the Vikings’ first game of the year on Friday, December 6, 2013.
Senior guard Breanna Peterson was equally terrific with 15 points and a fistful of assists, steals and rebounds.
The young Vikings were a little winded on the court, the results of having only one practice in nine days due to the holidays and three days off of school because of the wild winter weather. Still, the team played hard on defense and worked the ball inside repeatedly to Gruber-Schulz and to freshman center Emily Jacobsen. Jacobsen played exceptionally well on the defensive side of the ball and offensively ended her night with 8 points.
Ninth-grader Essance Haines, a quick guard and ball hawk, netted 4 points while sophomore Trace McQuatters scored 2 points to end the Vikings’ scoring.
Liz O’Phelan, a junior forward, came off the bench and gave her teammates some needed rest, and she completely shut down Wrenshall’s Brittany O’Brien (10 points) when she guarded her. Wrenshall’s sophomore forward Shana LaVeau led the Wrenshall Wrens with 14 points.
Freshman guard Molly Thomas and senior guard Susy Burton also saw quite a bit of action. Junior forward Jami Sjogren didn’t play because she is recovering from mononucleosis and strep throat.
Vikings lose to South Ridge 60-17
Viking girls’ Head Coach Mitch Dorr didn’t have much to say about the game the Vikings played against South Ridge last Tuesday night, December 10, 2013.
“We didn’t execute. We didn’t show much effort. South Ridge outworked us all night long. They ran a half-court trap and we didn’t handle it well. We had some hustle issues. Make no mistake, they were a better team. But that doesn’t give us an excuse not to play hard and we didn’t play hard. That was very disappointing.”
Lily Gruber-Schulz and Breanna Peterson accounted for 16 of the 17 points scored by the Vikings.
“Clearly we have to find more players who can score for us,” said Dorr.
After falling behind 34-8 at the half, Dorr started five freshmen the second half. “They played well. We are going to continue to shake things up until we find the players who will work hard and play hard for the team,” Dorr said.
One bright spot was the play of the junior varsity, said Dorr. “They played terrific. It was nice to see.”
