After taking a week off to enjoy time with family and friends, the 5-2 CCHS boys’ basketball team traveled to Ely to play in the two-day Ely Timberwolves holiday tournament held Dec. 28-29.
First up for the Vikings was a matchup against the 4-4 Bigfork Huskies. The Vikings got off to an early lead and stretched out, allowing head coach Colin Everson to play all eight of his players.
“After a week apart I thought we had a good game on Friday vs. Bigfork. We brought a positive atmosphere and the guys were able to find a rhythm throughout the game. I thought we came together as a team throughout this game. We got all eight guys we brought into the game and they all saw some action.”
The younger players who contributed to the team’s success against Bigfork were two ninth-graders, Jacob Dorr and Isaac Sandstrom; and eighth-grader Paul Dorr.
Will Ramberg led the team in scoring with 28 points. Right behind him was Pete Sutton, who netted 24 and Ray Gordon, who had 23 points. Adam Dorr finished with 7 points, Jacob Dorr 7, and Jordon Porter ended his night with 5 points in the Vikings’ 94-60 win.
The next day the Vikings faced the Ely Timberwolves.
“On Saturday versus Ely we got down early and never were able to quite break over the hump to get back in it,” Coach Everson said. “We got off to a slow start, and Ely took an early lead. We didn’t quite bring the energy to match the energy that Ely brought.”
Senior guard/forward Will Ramberg once again led the team in scoring with 32 points. Ray Gordon, 13, Pete Sutton 11 and Jordan Porter, 8, completed the team’s scoring in the 86-64 loss to the Timberwolves.
“Overall, it was a good weekend,” Everson said. “It’s always fun to be with a team and get some time together, whether it’s playing basketball or hanging out in the hotel in between games. I think we will be able to grow a lot from this tournament, which is what this is all about—learning the game of basketball, and the lessons it teaches us.”
The boys play away against South Ridge on Jan. 4 and then come home to face McGregor on Jan 11. The game starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out to cheer for your Vikings!
