Cook County High School girls’ volleyball team traveled to McGregor on Thursday, October 9 to face the alwaystough Mercs.

The Vikings won the match in three straight games, winning game one 25-21, game two 25-14 and game three 25-20.

Head Coach Pam Taylor said her team, which looked ragged in its victory two days earlier against Floodwood, played “better, but was still a little rough around the edges.”

Meredith Sutton finished with 7 kills and 4 ace serves while Linden Sutton had 6 kills and 4 ace serves.

The win moved the Vikings’ record to 14-6.

Vikings lose to Cromwell

Volleyball’s whirlwind season concluded for the Vikings in their last regular match of the season when they traveled to Cromwell on Tuesday, October 14 to face the Cromwell Cardinals.

The Vikings knew it was important to finish strong against a conference opponent, and although they played well, they fell just short of beating the Cardinals.

The Vikings lost their first game 25-21 and fell 25-22 in their second match but rebounded to win the third game 25-18 and the fourth game 25-19 setting up a fifth deciding game.

“We played well although we started out slowly,” said Coach Taylor. “We were down by 7 points in the 5th game and made a comeback to lose by 4 points 15-11. The kids played hard and fought to the end.”

The Vikings finished 4th in the Polar League Conference and ended their regular season play with a 14-7 record.

When asked about the upcoming playoffs, Taylor said, “Section seeding isn’t final but by my calculations we will be seeded third in our half and play Floodwood on Wednesday, October 22 at home.”

All-conference honors will be decided soon and it should be interesting to see who the Vikings place on the first and second teams, and who makes honorable mention.

Go Vikings!
