On Friday, May 17, the Vikings’ baseball team beat the Mesabi East Giants 18-4 at Mesabi.

The Vikings improved their record to 3-6 and 2-4 in the conference while Mesabi evened its record at 6-6.

Joe Borud pitched for the Vikings and got the win. While the whole team hit well, Kale Boomer, Colin Everson, Joe Borud and Thomas Anderson got several big hits to seal the win for the Vikings.

The next day the Vikings lost a tough game at home to the Ely Timberwolves 12-10. Ely upped its record to 11-3 on the year.

Both teams battled rain and a soggy field as they got into a slugfest. Despite going up early, the Vikings gave up 7 runs in the third inning on 4 hits and trailed 7-6 going into the 4th inning.

Meanwhile, the Vikings chased Ely’s starting pitcher Louis Gerzen from the mound after three innings after Gerzin gave up 6 runs on 3 hits. The cold, wet weather affected the pitchers who issued more walks then usual.

While the Vikings scored 4 runs on Ely reliever Max Ganth, who gave up 4 runs on 5 hits, they couldn’t quite keep pace with Ely.

Viking ace Kale Boomer took the loss for the Vikings. Frankie Miller, who did his best, couldn’t quite shut down the Ely hitters as he came in relief of Boomer.

At press time on Thursday, May 23 the always-tough Esko Eskimos were heading to town to play the Vikings. The next day the Vikings had to travel to Two Harbors to face the Agates in their last regular season game before playoffs begin on Saturday.

“They [Section 7A officials] are trying to get seedings done today (May 23), but we haven’t finished playing the season yet,” said Assistant Coach Todd Toulouse.

“A lot of teams are playing today and tomorrow so I don’t know how they will figure out the seedings. Still, we might have to play on Saturday. I’ve seen most of the teams play that we will face in the playoffs and I like our chances. I haven’t seen anybody out there that we can’t beat,” Toulouse said.
