A young Viking girls’ basketball team took the floor on Thursday, November 30 against a Silver Bay Mariner squad that started five seniors and on this day, youth beat experience.
It took the Vikings the first half of the game to settle down and work their way into finding a rhythm on offense. Meanwhile, the defense more than held its own against the Mariners, keeping the game close.
Junior guard and the Vikings’ top scorer Sophie Eliasen fouled out late in the game. With the team’s top player on the bench, the girls on the floor rallied and tied the score 37-37 to send the contest into overtime. Once regulation ended, the Vikings took control and outscored the Mariners 7-2 to take a 44-39 win.
Sophie Eliasen led the team with 17 points. Sophomore forward Abbie Crawford netted 13, freshman forward Paisley Smith scored seven, sophomore forward Emma Gesch put in five, and senior guard Maya McHugh, the team’s top defensive player, scored two points.
Freshman guard Ariana Poyirier and two eighth-graders, Christianna Mendvil and Morgan Starkey, round out the varsity squad. Vikings’ head coach Kelly Senty will also call on players from a very young but very talented junior varsity to play some varsity minutes this year. The Vikings’ JV held Silver Bay’s JV scoreless in the first half of its game and won 70-10.
The Vikings have away games at Two Harbors and Northeast Range before playing Cromwell at home at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 18. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
