The girls’ basketball season ended this week but not before they won two games in the playoffs.
Four Vikings were in double figures in the team’s opening Section 7A playoff game win against Fond du Lac played in Esko on Thursday, March 2.
Up 48 to 10 at the half, the Vikings held Fond du Lac to 7 second-half points while adding 39 more to come away with the 87-17 victory.
“The girls started the game strong and looked to push the ball up the court,” said head coach Kelly Senty.
“The younger girls also got some solid minutes as we were able to play all the girls off the bench.”
Sophia Eliasen led the Vikings in scoring with 21 points; Emily Jacobsen had 17, Abbie Crawford 12, Sarah Toftey 11, Bayley Cox 6, Alyssa Spry 4, Hannah Toftey 4, Arianna Poyirier 4, and Jadzia Crow 3.
Top scorers for Fond du Lac were Aaliyah Peterson and Kayla Reynolds, who each had 4 points.
Cook County played South Ridge at 1 p.m. at Hibbing Memorial on Saturday, March 4.
Vikings beat South Ridge to advance
Emily Jacobsen took the team on her back and behind her 37 points, led Cook County to victory over the South Ridge Panthers on Saturday. The Vikings won 55-49 to advance to the semi-finals against Mountain Iron- Buhl (MIB) on March 7.
Sophie Eliasen scored 13 points, Maya McHugh 2, Bayley Cox 2, and Hannah Toftey had 1 point for the Vikings.
Vikings bow to MIB
Mountain Iron Buhl is currently ranked third in the statewide Class A rankings, and they played like it against the Vikings on Tuesday night in the University of Minnesota Duluth gym.
The Vikings fell 91-37 in the Section 7A semi-finals.
“MIB full court pressed the whole game. Alternating between man, 1-2-2 and 1-3-1,” defenses, said head coach Kelly Senty.
“The girls broke the press with quick passes but had difficulty converting that accomplishment to points on the board. I think we worked so hard on focusing on getting the ball across the half court line that we didn’t have enough left to run our offense like we have in past games,” Coach Senty said.
“We played half court man. We had Maya work on denying the ball to their best shooter.”
Senior center Emily Jacobsen led the Vikings with 13 points. Sophie Eliasen scored 8, Sarah Toftey 5, Arianna Poyirier 4, Maya McHugh 3, Bayley Cox 2, and Abbie Crawford netted 2 points.
Three MIB players, Mya Buffetta 18, Chelsea Mason 16 and Mary Burke 15 led MIB in scoring.
Head coach Kelly Senty said her team fought hard, but MIB, a traditional statewide powerhouse, had too much firepower for her team to overcome.
Cook County ended with a 15-11 mark to finish in sixth place in the Polar League.
Next year will be a bit of a rebuilding period for the Vikings. Senty will lose four seniors, Emily Jacobsen, Bayley Cox, and twins Sarah and Hannah Toftey. Coming back will be junior Maya McHugh, sophomores Jadzia Crow and Sophie Eliasen, freshmen Abbie Crawford and Alyssa Spry, and eighth graders Arianna Poyirier and Zoe Nonnemacher.
