Vikings win first playoff game




Senior outside hitter Meredith Sutton recorded 18 kills and 13 digs to lead the Vikings to a 3-0 win over Barnum on Wednesday, October 25 at home.

Cook County swept the Bombers 25-12, 25-15, 25-17 to advance in the Section 7A playoffs.

Senior setter Abby Prom finished with 12 set assists while fellow senior outside hitter Raina Ryden finished with 16 set assists and four ace serves. Junior outside hitter Reilly Wahlers finished with 14 digs and junior middle hitter Alyssa Fenstad-Lashinski recorded 14 digs and five ace serves.

The Vikings received a first round buy in the playoffs.

Despite winning the Polar League crown with a 10-0 mark in conference play, the Vikings were seeded second in Section 7A to Polar League runner-ups Carlton. The Vikings defeated the Carlton Bulldogs three games to one in their only meeting of the year.

The Vikings got off to big leads in the first two games against the Barnum Bombers. It was only in the third game that Barnum really challenged the Vikings. With the score 19-16 the Vikings sent Raina Ryden to the serving line and the Vikings’ best server closed out Barnum. The last point of the third game was decided emphatically on a perfect bump and set to Meredith Sutton who then smashed the ball past the Bombers’ defense for the final point.

With the win the Vikings’ record is now 19-5 on the year.

The Vikings play again at home on Friday, October 27th against the winner of the Moose Lake/Willow River versus Wrenshall game. Both teams are familiar to Cook County. On September 14 the Vikings defeated Moose Lake/Willow River 25-21, 25- 21, 25-13. On October 10 the Vikings swept the Wrenshall Wrens by the scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-21.The game will start at 6 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings as the two-time Section 7A champions seek a third straight trip to the state tournament.
