Vikings win close game over Rebels

Never give up.

That was the big lesson the Vikings learned in their away game played Friday, February 17 in Moose Lake.

“We were down most of the game,” said head coach Kelly Senty, “But battled back with two minutes left. We had a steal and a layup by Sophie (Eliasen) to tie the game. A key free throw by Emily Jacobsen put us up by one.”

The Vikings held that one-point lead until the buzzer, taking the game 46-45.

With two early fouls on Jacobsen, Senty had to sit the Vikings’ center for much of the first half. Without the team’s big scorer and top inside defender in the game, the other girls had to step up, and step up they did.

“Maya McHugh was a force on defense and was key to shutting down Moose Lake/ Willow River’s leading scorer,” the coach said.

Also keeping the Lakers’ defense honest were some key drives to the basket by Sarah Toftey, said Senty.

“The girls are certainly learning to play from behind this season,” the coach added. “We will have a couple of days off and will ramp up for Nashwauk and the playoffs.”

Eliasen led Viking scorers with 17 points. Jacobsen netted 15, Sarah Toftey 6, Bayley Cox 4, Abbie Crawford 2, and Hannah Toftey 2.

The Vikings’ last regular season game will be played February 24 at Nashwauk, which sports an 8-17 overall record.

With a Polar League record of 8-7, the Vikings’ sit in sixth place out of 12 teams in the conference. The Vikings’ overall record is 13-9 on the season. Go Vikings!
