Vikings win big against Mesabi East

The Viking football team has shown steady improvement since their open season loss to Esko. Against the Mesabi East Giants the entire team played well, both on offense and defense. Here the boys are lining up against Barnum, another conference foe they beat. The Vikes are 2-0 in conference play. There is no game next Friday because Carlton has cancelled its season.

The Cook County Vikings played an all-around great game last Friday night when they went on the road and faced the Mesabi East Giants, beating the Giants 38-6.

Defensively, the Vikings held Mesabi to 85 yards rushing on 32 carries, and as Head Coach Mitch Dorr said, “Most of those yards came on their last drives when they were playing against our JV.”

On offense the Vikings racked up 524 yards and scored 38 points.

It was a breakout game for junior quarterback Kale Boomer who has been the Vikings’ starter since ninth grade.

Boomer carried the ball 14 times for 100 yards and was 9-15 for 162 yards through the air. Senior wide-out Dylan Quaife caught 7 passes for 132 yards and scored 3 touchdowns. Ben Kroska caught two balls for 30 yards.

On the ground Colin Everson carried 11 times for 123 yards and was named offensive player of the game for his 11.2-yard average per carry. Peter Warren also carried 11 times for 105 yards.

Junior center Justin Goldberg is enjoying a fine year for the Vikings. A stalwart on defense, he is also equally adept at blocking for his quarterback and opening holes for the running backs.

On defense Bradley VanDoren had 4 unassisted tackles and assisted on 6 others. He also had two sacks for the game and was named Viking defensive player of the game.

Peter Warren and Colin Everson were also in on numerous tackles and each had a fumble recovery. Boomer led the Vikings with 6 unassisted tackles and was in on 6 other tackles.

Ben Kroska also was in on 6 tackles and Gunner Anderson had a big game with two quarterback sacks.

“I was very happy with our focus throughout the game. Our varsity never had to punt and we never turned the ball over offensively,” Dorr said.

The Vikings play Ely this Friday night in Ely. They were scheduled to play against Carlton at home on Friday, September 30 but Carlton forfeited the season due to a lack of players. Dorr is trying to line up a replacement game but so far can’t find another team with the same open date, so for now there will be no home game on September 30.

The Vikings’ record is now 2-1 and 2-0 in conference play.
