Fans shivered and cheered in windy 36-degree temperatures while the Cook County Vikings got hot on the field and beat a good Blackduck Drake football team 42-12 on Saturday, October 27 at Lyle Anderson Field.

Senior running back Colin Everson celebrated his birthday in style by scoring two touchdowns and playing some great defense.

But Everson didn’t celebrate alone. Quarterback Kale Boomer might have played his best game ever for the Vikings as he ran the option to perfection and constantly befuddled the Drake defense. Playing in his last game ever on Lyle Anderson field, Boomer rushed for 198 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Vikings (8-1) to a Section 7-A semi-section win and put them in the championship game against Barnum Thursday, November 1 at 4:45 p.m. at Public School Stadium in Duluth.

Viking tailback Peter Warren also got in on the scoring, rushing for a 35-yard TD in the first quarter. That left Warren seven touchdowns short of last week, but the senior was happy to move on and get to face Barnum one more time. Barnum has the only win against the Vikings this year, a 30-7 win at CCHS early in the year. The Vikings hope to change that on Thursday.

But as good as the Vikings’ offense was the defense was better. The defense held Blackduck to four first downs in the first half and two first downs in the second half and kept them to 98 yards of offense for the game. Meanwhile Cook County racked up 22 first downs.

The Vikings’ first touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Boomer. The 2-point conversion failed and the Vikings kicked off and held the Drakes to force a punt.

A few minutes later Peter Warren took the ball 35 yards for a TD and the Vikings were up 12-0 after the two-point conversion again failed.

Everson scored late in the second quarter on a 1-yard run and Boomer ran in the 2-point conversion to spot the Vikings to a 20-0 lead.

It appeared that the Vikings tried an on-side kick on their kickoff and the Drakes recovered the ball at midfield. With time running out they gave the ball to their big running back Trey Volk, who got away for about 40 yards on one run before taking the ball into the end zone just before half time. Their 2-point pass failed and the Vikings led 20-6 at half time.

The Vikings stopped the Drakes completely in the second half, giving up no first downs until late in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile their offense hummed as the running backs and Boomer ran up big chunks of yardage behind some great blocking. Both Everson and Boomer scored touchdowns in the third quarter and Boomer added one more TD in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run. Thomas Anderson ran in the 2-point conversion and the Vikings led 42-6 before the Blackduck’s Zac Carlson picked up a fumble and ran 70 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter against the Vikings’ younger players. Blackduck’s extra point kick was no good.

Head Coach Mitch Dorr said his team’s goal is to “raise our level of play to the next level” as they get ready to play Barnum. He also said, “Joe Borud stepped up and had a great game. His blocking from the wide receiver position was outstanding.”

Kale Boomer led the team in tackles with 13 and Clay Johnson’s play was “outstanding,” said Dorr, but the defensive player of the game honor was awarded to Jonny Jacobsen.

“Jonny got Defensive Player of the Week for disrupting their offensive line,” Dorr said.
