What was expected to be a close game between the 3-1 Floodwood Polar Bears and the 3-1 Cook County Vikings turned into something of a blowout as the Vikings won 44-6 in a game played at home on Friday, September 29.

The Vikings led 8-0 after the first period, but exploded for 30 second-quarter points to take a 38-0 lead into the locker room. The Vikings tacked on a touchdown in the third period, and late in that period, on a kick-off return with the Vikings’ younger players on the field, Floodwood’s Isaac Rhode scored their lone points on a long sprint to the end zone.

Viking junior halfback Ethan Sporn ran through and around the Polar Bears all night long. Sporn ran 41 yards to pay dirt in the first quarter, then followed that up by runs of 30 and 22 yards for touchdowns in the second quarter. He also caught a four-yard touchdown in the second period. All told Sporn rushed for 170 yard on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns. Ethan averaged 8.9 yard per carry.

Josh Prom was 8-13 passing for 141 yards and two touchdowns. The junior quarterback also carried 12 times and gained 96 yards on the ground. He averaged 8 yards per carry.

Dillon Sjogren rushed 14 times and gained 30 yards. Jack Haussner made a nifty catch and run of 22 yards to score a touchdown in the second period. Mikey Burton also caught a 22-yard touchdown from Prom in the third period.

Adam Dorr, in relief for Prom, threw once and completed an 18-yard pass.

Dillon Sjogren led the team in total tackles with 15 while Prom finished with 10 and Billy Hackett seven.

“I thought our defensive secondary really improved this week as Jack Haussner, Levi Sheils, Colton Furlong, and Connor Somnis really did a nice job,” said head coach Mitch Dorr. “The defense continues to be aggressive as they forced three fumbles and intercepted two passes.”

After five games Sporn has rushed for 915 yards and gained 108 yards through the air on catches. Junior quarterback Josh Prom has thrown for 319 yards and rushed for 458 yards. Andrew Miller has rushed for 124 yards and gained 69 yards on catches. Jack Haussner is second on the team in receiving yards with 88.

Dillon Sjogren leads the team in tackles with 48. Billy Hackett has 42, Prom 41, Connor Somnis 38 and Sporn 36.

Mikey Burton and Hackett both have two quarterback sacks and Sporn has one sack.

The 4-1 Vikings play the 3-2 Ely Timberwolves tonight (Friday, October 6) at 7 p.m. in what should be a great contest between two of the best nine-man teams in the conference. The game starts at 7 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
