Sarah Deschampe went 4-4 from the plate to lead her teammates to a 9-6 win over conference rival Floodwood Polar Bears on April 25 when the two teams met on a neutral field in Fridley, Minnesota.

“Every Viking got a hit in the game,” said Head Coach Jessie Anderson.

Alex Slanga took the mound and got the 9-6 win for the Vikings who collected 19 hits in the contest.

Maddy Roy and Miranda Deschampe were 3-5 at bat while Jocelyn Denewith went 3-4 from the plate. Mariah Deschampe also hit well, collecting two hits in the contest, said Anderson.

“The girls played really well for our first game of the season and our first time outside,” Anderson said.

The second game didn’t go so well for the Vikings who had to face last year’s conference champion Carlton Bulldogs.

“They were out for revenge for what we did to them in the playoffs last year,” Anderson said, referring to the last place Vikings’ huge upset win over top-seeded Carlton in the Section 7A playoffs.

“We only got one hit off of their pitcher, and that was by Miranda Deschampe in the last inning. We also gave up a lot of walks (8) in the game,” Anderson said. The Vikings were 10 runned and lost in five innings 12-1 to Carlton.

“No matter what, it was nice to be outside and playing ball,” said Anderson.

The next day the team got to watch the Minnesota Twins defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 at Target field.

On Monday, April 28 the Vikings played Cromwell at home on a day that Frosty the Snowman would have complained was too cold to be outside.

The tough Vikings outdueled the Cromwell Cardinals, 19-8, with Slanga taking the win from the mound.

“Carrie Palmer and Alex each had a triple in the game. Alex was 2-3 and Jamie Sjogren and Miranda Deschampe got a couple of hits in the game. Jamie was out all last year so it’s been nice to see how she has played so far this year. We were worried about how she would come back, but she’s been playing well for us,” Anderson said.

“We still have some work to do to get solid in the middle of the infield and we have to figure out our catching situation when Maddy takes the mound, but overall, I’m really pleased with the way that the girls are playing.

“We also have to be smarter running base paths, but that hasn’t been too big an issue so far because when we have made mistakes we have had big leads and they haven’t affected the outcome of the game.

“I really have to give these girls credit. This is the second year in a row that we have had to practice inside. The girls have great attitudes. We lost a couple of players because of the weather this year. It’s tough, but these girls have handled it very well,” said Anderson.
