Heavy snowfall caused the boys’ Friday, January 17, game against the Carlton Bulldogs to be cancelled, but the team did get in a game on Tuesday, January 21, at home against the Mesabi East Giants.

Both teams came into the contest with two wins and the game was close throughout.

Behind the offense provided by Pete Sutton and Jordan Porter the Vikings took a 30-23 lead into the locker room at the half. However, the Giants talented junior guard Hunter Hannuksula came out in the second half on fire, and led his team to a 48-41 lead with 6:49 to play.

Just as the game seemed to be slipping away, Adam Dorr was fouled and sank two free throws to cut into the lead. Sutton stole the ball on the next series and soared in for a lay-up, but the Giants came back with two of their own. Back on offense, Sutton found Dorr underneath and Adam, who was fouled, made the shot and then converted the throw to make the score 50-48.

Hannuksula was fouled on the next play and made one of two free throws. Jordan Porter took the ball down the court, faked his defender out near the top of the key and stormed through the lane for a layup. Sutton hit a three point shot from the right side of the lane and the Vikings were back in the lead.

The Vikings went up 57-52 as time was winding off the clock. Hannuksula put in a long three from the top of the key to narrow the Vikings lead to two, but the Giants had to start fouling and the Vikings salted away the hard fought 61-57 win at the free throw line behind Porter and Sutton.

Pete Sutton led the team in scoring with 25 points. Jordan Porter netted 22, Adam Dorr had 8, Austin Lincoln finished with 2, Tate Crawford 2, and Keegan Morrison ended his night with 2 points.

The Vikings traveled to Wrenshall on January 24, to face the Wrens and then play at home on Friday, January 31, against the Two Harbors Agates in a game that starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
