Cook County played host to the Northeast Range Nighthawks on Tuesday, September 20, feeding the Nighthawks a steady dose of spikes and hard to return serves. Mix that in with some great scrambling to save points and the Vikings had their hometown fans cheering them on to a 3-0 win over a scrappy team from the Iron Range.
The first game was a nailbiter as the lead went back and forth. In the end the Vikings won 25-22 as both teams played well. Games two and three scores were the same 25-17, but the Vikings had control of each contest, pulling away from early ties to steadily increase their lead and win handily.
The Vikings rotating front line of Katie Peck, Maggie Smith, Kalina Dimitrova, Anna Helmerson, Emmalli Myers and Molly Quello did a good job of keeping the Rangers off balance, blocking and spiking well at the net. Backcourt players Makenzie Fairbanks, Taylor Everson, Hailie Wiele, Trinity Rude and Kamryn Johnson did a great job of setting the table for the front line.
Both sides did a good job of keeping the ball off of the floor for much of the night and there was a lot of long, exciting points played in the match.
Northeast Range had one senior and one junior on their varsity roster. Most of their squad was ninth and tenth graders and they played well but the Vikings were a little bigger and better.
The Vikings played at home against Barnum on September 22 before playing their next five games on the road. On October 11 the Vikings returned to their home court to square off against McGregor and then on October 14 they play Lakeview Christian Academy at home.
