Bend don’t break. That was the Viking’s defensive strategy against the Ely Timberwolves. As a result, Ely would end the game with more yards of offense and first downs but trail the Vikings on the scoreboard.
The Cook County High School football team traveled to Ely last Friday, October 7, and took a hard-fought 14-8 victory over the Timberwolves.
Ely took an 8-0 lead into halftime, scoring in the first period on a 22-yard run and then converting the two-point conversion on the run.
The Vikings’ finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 48-yard pass from Paul Dorr to Amos Falter. Paul ran in for the two-point conversion to tie the score.
Paul Dorr ran for a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and the two-point conversion pass failed. However, that was all the points the Vikings would need as the Vikings stingy defense held the Timberwolves out of the endzone.
Offense
The Vikings ended up with 124-yards on 29 carries, while Ely ran for 241 yards on 41 carries.
Ryan Christiansen led Cook County rushers, carrying 12 times for 64 yards, a 5.3-yard average.
Viking quarterback Paul Dorr carried 12 times for 50 yards and Ray Dressely, back from injury, carried four times for 11 yards. Dressely also had three kickoff returns for 96 yards, a 32-yard average.
Paul attempted nine passes, completing four for 75 yards. Amos Falter caught two balls for 62 yards. Ryan Christiansen had one catch for eight yards, and Kole Anderson had one catch for five yards.
The Timberwolves attempted 15 passes, completing seven for 44 yards.
All told, the Timberwolves had ten first downs to nine for the Vikings. Ely had 285 yards of offense to 199 for the Vikings.
Defense
Ray Dressely had a team-high 19 tackles to lead the Vikings. Kole Anderson finished with 15, Ryan Christiansen had 10, Jacob Dorr eight, Paul Dorr six, Payton Morrison four, Recko Helmerson four, Ben Rex three, Rayce Gibson two, Arlo Christiansen two, Calvin Battees two, Loki Larson two, Jordan Backstrom one, Ryan Smith one.
Ely finished with eight penalties, two crucial block-in-the-back calls, for a loss of 70-yards. The Vikings had three penalties for a loss of 17 yards.
With the win, the Vikings are now 4-1 on the season. The Vikings play Mountain Iron-Buhl at Mountain Iron this Friday and finish the regular season with a home game against Cherry on Friday, October 20. The game will starta7p.m.Comeoutand cheer for your Vikings!
