On Thursday, December 17 the Cook County High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Silver Bay to play against a good Mariner team and came up just short, losing 53-50.

“We played really well in Silver Bay,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr. “Dyami Blackwell had a great game as a freshman and really shot the ball well. Sam O’Phelan has been doing a great job of being consistent on the boards for us.”

Blackwell led the team with 19 points going 9 of 20 from the field. Blackwell made 8 out of 14 shots from two-point range to average 57 percent, but was 1 out of 6 from behind the 3-point. He also garnered 7 rebounds and 2 assists. O’Phelan finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, 4 of them offensive boards; Lucas Phillips netted 9 points and 6 boards, Rory Bakke contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds and Jerod Spry and Trusen Gordon each scored one point.

While the loss to Silver Bay was tough, the next night’s game against Two Harbors at home was a win that bounced away from them.

“Versus Two Harbors, we were up 14 points with 9 minutes left and ended up losing by 8 points,” said Coach Dorr.

“We scored 6 points in the final 8 minutes. We lost our composure and really didn’t get many quality shot attempts. We need to do a better job of being patient and more disciplined,” Coach Dorr said, adding, “We are still learning a lot about the game.”

The Vikings lost 58-50.

Against Two Harbors Marcus Logan led the team with 14 points and 2 blocked shots. He was followed by Dyami Blackwell’s 10 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds. Sam O’Phelan finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Lucas Phillips had 7 points, 3 boards; Jerod Spry 5 points, 4 rebounds; and Rory Bakke finished with 3 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds. Both Blackwell and Phillips each made two 3-point shots in the game.

Two Harbors used a balanced attack to get by the Vikings. Four Agates were in double figures, Ollie Carpenter 14, Derek Peters 14, Jayden Ruberg 11, and Ian Johnson 10.

The Vikings’ early season record is now 1 win, 3 losses. Marcus Logan leads the team with an 11.3 point per game scoring average. Blackwell’s 10.5 points, Phillips’ 9 points, Spry’s 7.5 points and Bakke’s 5.5 points per game scoring average follow him. O’Phelan leads the team with 8 rebounds per game. He is followed by Bakke with 7.3, Phillips 4.8, Logans 4.3 and Blackwells 4 rebounds per game average.

The Vikings played Cromwell at Cromwell on December 21 then take a Christmas break and don’t resume action until they meet Barnum at Barnum on January 8.

They play their first home game of the New Year on January 15 at 4:45 p.m. against Silver Bay. Go Vikings!
