The Cook County Viking’s volleyball team played host to the Silver Bay Mariners on Tuesday, September 7, and swept the Mariners 3-0.
Starting for the Vikings was four seniors, Molly LaVigne, Charlet Waver, Morgan Starkey, Sadie Wilson, and two juniors, Katie Peck and Emmalli Myers.
The Vikings won the first game in dominating fashion 25-12. Silver Bay played much better in the second game, but the Vikings prevailed 25-20 and for the last game the Vikings kept the pressure on and took it 25-15, with head coach Marlene Zimmer subbing liberally throughout the final game.
Both Morgan Starkey and Katie Peck showed flashes of power as they spiked the ball through the Mariner defense. A bright spot for the Mariners was the play of Hope Ernest, maybe the smallest player on the court. The Libero scooped a lot of hard-hit balls inches from the floor or the score would have been much worse for Silver Bay.
Molly LaVigne had a strong serving game, as did Charlet Waver. Sadie Wilson and Emmalli Myers set the ball well and both played well on the front line.
The Vikings play away at Cromwell-Wright on September 14 and Barnum on September 16 before coming home on September 23 to face Moose Lake/Willow River. Varsity action starts at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
