Thursday, October 11 was a big night for the Cook County girls’ volleyball team.
First off, it was Homecoming weekend and the girls were stoked to play a great game in front of the biggest crowd on hand to see a game this year.
Second, retired volleyball coach Pam Taylor was having the gym named after her and what better way to say thank you to Ms. Taylor than take a win in the officially named Pam Taylor gym?
Last, it was senior night, and head coach Marlene Wester introduced her seven senior players and senior manager Luke Johnson, telling the audience she was going to miss the seniors and noted their leadership and great work with younger teammates.
After introducing seniors Elsa Lunde, Andrea Larsen, Sophie Eliasen, Sela Backstrom, Reilly Wahlers, Alyssa Fenstad and Emma Smith, it was time to stand for the national anthem and listen as Amy Carpenter belted out the song like a pro.
By then, it was time for the game to start, and in keeping with a long held tradition, all seven seniors started and played the first game.
The Vikings took the match in three straight games 25-16, 25-8, and 25-16.
Alyssa Fenstad led the team with eight kills and four ace serves.
Emma Smith had 12 set assists and Reilly Wahlers finished with 14 digs.
Lakeview’s Emma Jones had three kills and 24 digs. Jordan Mitchell also had eight digs for the Lions.
Cook County now has an 8-8 record, but is 7-3 in the Polar League Conference and are in fourth place out of 12 teams.
Carlton leads the conference with an 11-0 mark and is 28-2 on the year.
Vikings lose to Carlton
