The CCHS Vikings girls’ basketball team traveled to Barnum on Friday, February 2 and fell to the Barnum Bombers 69-34.
“Barnum is a physical and scrappy team,” said head coach Kelly Hawsen.
“Abbie (Crawford) was out for that game due to being sick, so we didn’t have a lot of subs,” added the coach.
Sophie Eliasen led the team in scoring with 11 points. Ariana Poyirier netted 7, Paisley Smith had 1, Alyssa Spry 9, and Morgan Starkey put in 6 points.
So far this season junior guard Sophie Eliasen is leading the team by averaging 15.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Sophie also leads the team with 3.5 steals per game.
Vikings paint Bluestreaks blue
On Monday, February 5 the Vikings hosted the Chisholm Bluestreaks girl’s’ basketball team and quickly set the tone for the game by playing good defense and taking care of the basketball. The excellent D led to turnovers and easy baskets for the Vikings.
Sitting in the stands and watching the Chisholm team, it led to thinking about Michael Johnson’s hit song “Bluer than Blue,” as the Bluestreaks looked decidedly confused and dejected as the Vikings steadily pulled away to a 46-16 halftime lead and won going away 66-26.
Alyssa Spry was especially disruptive to the Bluestreaks’ offense early, stealing the ball with her excellent pressure defense and fellow guard Ariana Poyirier and Sophie Eliasen also stole passes and raced down the floor to set up the Vikings’ offense. Meanwhile, inside Paisley Smith and Emma Gesch did yeoman’s (yeowoman?) work by defending the basket and going hard after every rebound.
Up 10-0 before Chisholm scored, the Vikings raced to a 45-16 halftime lead and won 66-26.
The smaller Vikings had their best game of the year when it came to rebounding. When a shot went up on offense or defense, the Vikings did an exemplary job of boxing out the Chisholm players, and the Vikings ended with a vast lead in rebounding.
