On Friday, April 21 the CCHS girls’ fast pitch softball team traveled to Cook, Minnesota to play the North Woods Grizzlies and lost 13-7.

The Vikings scored early in the first inning, however North Woods came back in the bottom of the first after five walks by Viking pitcher Abby Prom to take an 8-1 lead. North Woods added another run in the third.

The Vikings fought back in the 6th, scoring six runs after some great hitting by Alyssa Spry and Maranda and Mariah Deschampe. The score was 9-7, and the Vikings had new life.

But North Woods answered by adding four runs in the bottom of the 6th and that is where the score stayed.

“We definitely hit better today than in any other game. We capitalized on some mistakes they made and fought our way back into it,” said Viking head coach Peter Lucken. “We are improving every game. We just need our pitchers to stay around the zone and our defense to continue to back them up. If we keep playing the game good things will eventually happen.”

Jamie Johnson, a junior outfielder, hit a fly ball on this at-bat. Unfortunately it was caught.

Vikings fall to Esko

Once again the Vikings boarded the bus to travel to an away game, this time taking the long trip to Esko on a cold, snowy Tuesday, April 25 to face the Double A Esko Eskomos.

The Lady Vikings lost to Esko 15-0 in a four-inning game. Abby Prom was the starting pitcher for the Vikings and had a pretty good first inning, said head coach Peter Lucken, only giving up three runs. However, Esko came back in the second and scored seven.

Meanwhile, said the coach, “The Viking bats were silent for the day as the only runners we had reached on errors.”

Lucken added, “Even though Esko’s pitcher was the best one we have seen all year we did put the ball in play a lot and did not strike out often. Once again our biggest problem is our pitching. That is an area we have struggled with all year.”

If the weather allowed, the Vikings traveled to Moose Lake on April 27, then played an away game at Cromwell on May 1 before playing at home on Tuesday, May 2 against Barnum. The game starts at 4 p.m. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
