The Cook County High School girls’ fast pitch softball team traveled to Silver Bay on Tuesday, April 10 to play the Silver Bay Mariners on a snowy, cold, cold day and fell 18-8.
The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
With the Vikings’ practice field slowly unraveling from the snow, this was not only the first game of the year, but it was the first time the team has ventured from the practice gym to play in the spurious spring weather.
Fans that attended the game in Silver Bay said it looked like the Mariners had used a snow blower to clear their baseball field so the game could be played. That’s some determination!
In assessing the contest Viking head coach Peter Luken said, “Abby Prom was on the mound for the Vikings and pitched well for how cold it was. Our defense struggled as it was our first venture outside this year.”
Starting for the Vikings were Abby Prom at pitcher, Alyssa Spry at catcher, Emma Smith at first base, Bianca Zimmer at second, Harleigh Lindquist played third base, Abbie Crawford played shortstop, Emma Gesch was in left field, Hanna Borson played center field, and Jamie Johnson played right field.
Although it was their first time to face opposing pitching, the Vikings wielded their bats with some authority, collecting eight hits. Three players smashed doubles, Alyssa Spry, Emma Smith and Hanna Borson. Abby Prom and Abbie Crawford both collected singles as did Harleigh Lindquist and Jamie Johnson.
“We hit the ball very well for our first game, and we can build off of this and learn from this game and use the information to put on a good competition against Floodwood next Tuesday, weather permitting,” Luken said.
