Vikings’ season comes to an end in Floodwood

TheCook County baseball season came to a close for the seventhseeded Vikings last week when they lost to second-seeded Floodwood, 8-2. The Vikings ended the season with a 6-11 record.

On Wednesday, June 2, the Vikings traveled to Floodwood. Earlier in the season, the Vikings played in a high-scoring game against the Polar Bears where they came up short one run, 11-10.

The Vikings were unable to get a hit in the top of the first inning as the Polar Bears prepared for their time at the plate. Senior ace James Groth got the starting nod from Head Coach Arleigh Jorgenson. Following a routine groundout, Floodwood got a hard hit double from its third baseman. Following a fly out, a Viking fielding error led to the runner at second base scoring. Floodwood took a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

Despite a single by Colin Everson, the Vikings couldn’t muster anything else in the second inning. In the bottom half of the second inning, Floodwood led off with a solo homerun. After a ground out settled things down a bit, the Polar Bears hit two straight singles. On the next two plays, consecutive fielding errors hurt the Vikings, as Floodwood scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.

 

 

Senior Drew Holmen started the top of the third inning off with a single. He stole both second and third base. Groth was walked as the Vikings had runners on the corners with no outs. Next, Groth stole second base. Rude was up and hit a shot to the third baseman who threw out Holmen at the plate. Groth advanced to third and scored when Darryl Hansen grounded out to the shortstop. The Vikings now trailed 6-1.

Despite Floodwood’s two hits and two walks, the Vikings escaped a jam in the bottom of the third inning to keep the score intact. Cook County was retired in order in the top of the fourth while Floodwood added another run in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead after four innings of play.

The Vikings couldn’t muster a run in the top of the fifth while Floodwood added another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning Cook County’s Dylan Quaife led off with a double. Following a Viking strikeout, Everson ripped an RBI single to give the Vikings their second run of the day. No other scoring would take place as the Vikings lost 8-2 to the Polar Bears.

Leading the way for Cook County was Groth, who was two for three with a run scored. Everson was also two for three with an RBI.
