Depth might be a problem for the Cook County High girls’ basketball team this year, but not heart. The girls who play basketball for the Vikings have plenty of heart.

Cook County High School varsity girls’ basketball coach Kelly Senty welcomed nine girls to her squad, and the kids have been working hard in practice to get ready for their first game at home against Two harbors on December 9 at 4:45 p.m.

Guard play should be strong for the Vikings. Senior twins Sarah and Hannah Toftey both have a lot of experience in the backcourt, as does sophomore Sophie Eliasen and junior Maya McHugh. The speedy Eliasen is a tough defender and a good shooter. The Toftey twins are good playmakers and McHugh is a great defender. Freshman Alyssa Spry is also a talented guard who will see minutes off the bench this season.

Abbie Crawford, a freshman forward, played some as an eighth grader and will see plenty of action this year. Abbie is a good long distance shooter and the Vikings will need scoring from her.

Senior Center Bailey Cox is scrappy, a good rebounder and good at finding her own shot. Bailey is also a good defender in the frontcourt.

Jasmine Smith, a junior forward, is a good defender and a good rebounder who might not start but will come off the bench to help her team.

Leading the team will be senior center Emily Jacobsen. Jacobsen averaged a double-double last year, scoring 15.6 points per game and grabbing 10 rebounds per game.

Jacobsen is also a tremendous defensive player who gives her all on the court.

The team finished 16-8 last year and should finish with a winning record this season. They don’t have a lot of depth, but a lot of heart should make up for that.
