The Cook County High School volleyball team wasted little time getting back into the win column following their opening season loss to the Marshall Hilltoppers by beating the Barnum Bombers at home on Thursday, September 1 in three straight games 25-8, 25-13 and 25-13.

Meredith Sutton finished with 14 kills and 16 digs. Tarin Hanson had 18 set assists and Alyssa Lashinski had 7 kills in a thoroughly dominating Viking performance.

Reilly Wahlers led off the first game by serving 12 straight points behind a stout defense. The Vikings’ defense held Barnum to thin runs of one point each until the Bombers rallied to score two straight points to make the score 23-8. At that point Meredith Sutton responded with two straight smoking hot spikes to put the game away. Sarah Toftey also served very well in game 1 and continued to serve well throughout the match.

A somewhat complacent Viking team led game two 11-9 before going on a four point rally to make it 15-9. The Vikings ran off four more points after Barnum’s big hitter Emily Miletich scored on a spike to push their lead to 19-10, then brought it home by out-scoring Barnum on a six-to-three run behind big spikes by Sutton, Lashinski and Emily Jacobsen who were set up by their back court teammates Raina Ryden, Hana Borson, Hannah Toftey, Abby Prom, Hanson and Wahlers.

Game three was more of the same. The Vikings and Barnum were tied 11-11 before the Vikings went to its front court for two big spikes by Sutton and Lashinski while Prom served three nice hard-to-return serves to push the lead to 16-11. Maranda Deschampe had a nice spike in this run while Ryden and Borson continually set up their teammates with nice bumps and passing as the Vikings won game three 25-13 to take the match. Overall the front-court play with blocks and spikes by Emily Jacobsen, Maranda and Mariah Deschampe, Meredith Sutton and Alyssa Lashinski were too much for the Bombers.

The Vikings’ next home game is against South Ridge on Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!

Viking libero Raina Ryden was a busy young lady during the game against the Barnum Bombers. Here she made one of many great plays on a ball, bumping it to her front line.
