The Cook County Vikings used a strong first half to win an early Polar League battle on the road against the Two Harbors Agates, 45-34. Thewin improves the Vikings’ record to 2-0 as Cook County enters a tough stretch of three games in five days before the Christmas break.
In the first half Cook County’s defensive pressure led to Ailee Larson and Ashley Deschampe both scoring seven points each. Brea Boomer added six points as the Vikings took an early 29-14 lead at halftime. Helping the Vikings in their quick start was their great first-half free throw shooting, as they made eight of ten free throws.
The second half was a bit more of a struggle, as the Agates outscored the Vikings 20-16 in the final 18 minutes of play. Turnovers, lack of rebounding, and some tough officiating made the second half a much more exciting affair. The Vikings held on though, winning, 45-34.
Cook County was led by Larson and Deschampe who each scored 11 points. Boomer and Essa Jacobsen added seven points each for the Vikings.
In the second half, Jacobsen scored her sixth point of the game to put her over 1,000 for her career. She finished the game with 1,001 career points. She is the fifth girl in Cook County history to score over 1,000 points. Theothers are Malinda Berglund (1,318), Rachael Bohnen (1,238), Maddy Cochrane (1,030), and Clara Waddell (1,011).
Jacobsen is the only Cook County basketball player to ever eclipse 1,000 career rebounds and 1,000 career points.
The Vikings’ next home game is this coming Tuesday against Silver Bay.
