A five-run second inning and outstanding pitching propelled the Cook County Viking baseball team to a 12-2 victory over the Wrenshall Wrens on April 28.
With the win, the Viking’s record is 1-1.
The Cook County High School baseball team traveled to Cloquet’s Braun Park to face the Wrenshall Wrens. The game was moved from Wrenshall to Cloquet because the Wrenshall ball field wasn’t playable.
The Vikings led 1-0 after the first inning. Ray Dresseley singled on the first pitch and scored the Viking’s first run.
Dresseley and Jacob Dorr each doubled in the second, and an error on a hit by Kole Anderson led to five runs for the Vikings.
After a scoreless third inning, the Vikings tacked on two more runs in the fourth. The Wren’s bats came to life in the fourth as they collected two hits and scored two runs. At the end of four innings, the Vikings led 8-2. The Vikings would add two in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth to close out the game 12-2.
Paul Dorr pitched a complete game, allowing two hits, two runs, and striking out 11. He didn’t give up a walk in the game.
The Wren’s Brysen Jessup was the losing pitcher. Jessup pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and nine runs.
Timely hitting, base stealing, walks, and errors by the Wren’s defense led to opportunistic runs for the Vikings. The Wren committed four errors, and the Vikings stole 12 bases, with three Vikings stealing at least two bases. Paul Dorr collected three stolen bases to lead the Vikings in that important category.
Ray Dresseley led the Viking’s with three hits in four at-bats. Both Jacob and Paul Dorr collected two hits in the game. Amos Falter had one hit and two walks in his three at-bats. Hunter Gomez collected two walks in three at-bats.
The Viking’s starters for the game were: Paul Dorr took the mound for the Vikings with Kole Anderson catching. Ray Dressley manned first, Benelli Myers second, Jacob Dorr shortstop, and Hunter Gomez started at third base. The Vikings starters in the outfield were J Shannon in left, Amos Falter in center, and Cy Oberholtzer in right.
The Vikings ended with three errors and the Wrens four. Wrenshall pitchers gave up eight walks and eight hits.
