On paper, this game looked like it would be a blowout. The South Ridge Panthers crushed Ely 48-6 and the next week Ely beat the Vikings 20-0, so this match-up seemed like a no-contest.
But what’s the old adage? That’s why they play the game?
The Vikings visited South Ridge on Friday, October 23 and the game was anything but a blowout.
South Ridge scored first with a first quarter touch down to lead 6-0. The Panthers added 14 more points in the second quarter but from then on, it was the Vikings’ defense, led by Isaiah Deschampe, that shut the Panthers down for the rest of the game. Although the Vikings managed only one touchdown in the fourth quarter, this had to be seen as a moral victory to hold a team that had been averaging 46 points per game to just 20 points.
While the Panthers gained 269 yards on the ground, the Vikings ran for 110 yards.
Aram Falter led Viking backs with 60 yards on 19 carries. Shaun Brozek ran for 27 yards on 10 carries and Paul Dorr gained 23 yards on nine rushes. Anthony Wiele caught two of those throws for 35 yards and Shaun Brozek caught two passes for 21 yards. Jonathan Huskey had the other catch for four yards.
Paul Dorr completed five passes out of 22 attempts to pick-up 60 yards through the air. South Ridge completed three passes out of seven attempts to gain 32 yards.
Cook County had ten first downs in the game to eight for the Panthers.
Isaiah Deschampe played a tremendous game on defense, ending his night with 11 tackles. Kole Anderson finished with seven, Brozek six, Ryan Christiansen five, Ray Dressley four, Wiele three, Danny Deschampe three, Jacob Dorr three, Aram Falter two, and Vaughn Swindelhurst had two tackles on the night.
