The Cook County High School Vikings football team participated in a scrimmage in Mountain Iron on Saturday, August 27. Scrimmages help coaches decide who will start, who is getting better, who is learning the schemes that will be used in varsity games. One of the big unknowns is who will emerge to play quarterback for the Vikings? Last season’s starter Paul Dorr moved with his family and the position is wide open. This scrimmage seemed to settle that question, with Hunter Rex taking snaps from the center.
New Viking Head Football Coach Steven Anderson offered and enthusiastic assessment about the Viking’s play in the scrimmage.
“The Cook County Vikings wrapped up their scrimmage this past Saturday. We scrimmaged Ely, Bigfork, and North Central. We played roughly 80 offensive plays and 80 defensive plays. Our Offensive and Defensive lines shined. In the backfield we were led by seniors Kole Anderson and Ryan Christiansen. We have a new Quarterback this year in Hunter Rex. He has put in the time this offseason in the weight room and learning the offense. We have 5 seniors on our roster this season in Ben Rex, Payton Morrison, Ryan Christiansen, Kole Anderson, and John Pierre.
“We open our season on Friday in McGregor. This season we will be broadcasted by the WTIP at all home and away games.”
Mountain Iron-Buhl will meet on October 14 in Grand Marais to play what could be a pivotal conference game. The Vikings first two games of the season will be played on the road. On Saturday, September 3 the team opens their season in McGregor. On September 16 the team travels to play Cherry. The Vikings first home game will be played on Friday, September 23 at 7 p.m. against the Ely Timberwolves.
