Many personal bests were set at the Section 7A track meet held June 1 at Esko, but no one qualified for this year’s state track meet.
Still, it was a great season for the Vikings, said head coach April Wahlstrom.
Nine Vikings competed at sections. Senior Sam O’Phelan, who only this year came out for track, improved his best long jump by 6 inches with a leap of 19 feet that earned him fifth place.
Leif Anderson, a sophomore, finished ninth place in the 400- meter dash with a personal best of 54.68. O’Phelan placed 13th with a time of 56 seconds.
Freshman Will Surbaugh finally cracked the 5-minute barrier in the mile, clocking 4:53 and finishing 11th. Surbaugh was in seventh with 100 yards to go in the race before the pack swallowed him up as he came down the stretch.
Senior Molly Thomas placed 13th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.
Junior Maya McHugh placed eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35.
“Our girls’ 4×800 meter relay placed eighth with Marin Hay, Cece Chmelik, Bryn Soland, and Claire LaVigne,” said Coach Wahlstrom. “We had a great season with lots of improvement throughout and we are looking forward to next season.”
