The South Ridge Panthers ended the Vikings’ baseball season on Wednesday, May 30, beating the Vikings 12-6 at Esko.
The Vikings’ Richie Furlong was 2-4 at the plate to lead Viking hitters.
The Vikings gave up 3 runs in the first inning and 1 run in the second inning.
Colin Everson hit an RBI single in the third inning, but the Vikings left the bases loaded when Joe Borud grounded out to end the inning.
Up 4-1, it was the Panthers’ turn to bat in the bottom of the third inning, and it was a long inning for the Vikings. The Panthers scored on an error and RBI single by Janke and RBI single by Karppinen, a walk by Wood, a two-run double by Lisic, and a groundout by Robby McQuade. All in all the Panthers scored 7 runs in that inning and it looked like the game was over.
But not so fast.
The fourth inning was big for the Vikings and gave them new life. Hunter Farley started things off with an RBI single, which was followed by an RBI single from Kale Boomer. An error moved Boomer down the base paths and he scored on an RBI single from Dylan Quaife. Wood’s long inning ended when he got Joe Borud to fly out. Once again the Vikings left the bases loaded but this time they scored 4 runs to pull the score to 11-5.
The Viking shut down the Panthers in the top of the fourth and fifth innings but that was about all they could do, scoring only one more run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Furlong. Panther pitcher Dan Wood got Farley to fly out to end the game.
South Ridge got big hits from Drew Janke and Wood, who teamed up for five hits on eight RBIs. Wood ended the game after allowing six runs over seven innings. He struck out eight batters, walked none and surrendered 12 hits.
The Vikings finished 6-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference to earn a 5th place finish in the nine-team field. Two Harbors won the conference with a record of 8-2 in Polar League games and finished their season 12-7.
