The last six minutes of the first half did in the Vikings boys’ basketball team in their game against the Two Harbors Agates played on Friday, December 13 at home.
“We played even up with them until there was about six minutes to play in the first half but Two Harbors went on a little run and we fell behind by nine points and we could just never catch up,” said Viking Head Coach Pat Eliasen. The Vikings lost, 49-39.
For the game Jonny Jacobsen and Lars Scannell led the team in scoring with 14 points each. Richie Furlong scored 5 points; Jamie Wick 3 points; and Leo Johnson hit for 3 points to end the Vikings’ scoring.
“Lars got a couple of quick fouls early in the first half and I had to sit him until the second half. Losing his play in that first half hurt us, but it did give other kids a chance to get in some good minutes,” Eliasen said.
The Vikings were also without their leading scorer and rebounder, senior forward Brandon Curtis, who was away on a family vacation.
“Not having Brandon on the court definitely hurt, but we still had our chances,” said Eliasen.
“Defensively I thought the kids did a good job of running the 2-3 zone we just introduced to them the week before. They really hustled, played smart, and really gave it a good effort,” Eliasen said.
The Vikings’ scheduled road trip to Mountain Iron Buhl (MIB) for a game that was to be played Monday, December 16 was cancelled due to bad weather.
At press time, the Vikings were set to play McGregor at McGregor on Friday, December 20, and then they don’t play again until January 3 when they travel to Esko to face the always-tough Eskimos.
The first home game won’t be played until January 10 against the Barnum Bombers.
